Camino de Santiago Virtual Challenge...

.. Get active in March!

The Camino de Santiago, or Way of St. James, is a Medieval pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in NW Spain. Today the ‘Camino’ is a unique experience attracting thousands of hikers from all over the World, and is now listed by UNESCO World Heritage for its role in encouraging cultural exchanges. Our ‘Virtual Camino Challenge’ mirrors the popular ‘Frances’ (French) trail, which is 769 km end to end, and starts in the Pyrenean foothills in the French Basque region at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

Wherever you actually start – choose your Challenge – take it on anywhere, anytime throughout March – including treadmills, your daily exercise allocation, trips to the shops, or even to your local church if you need some inspiration. Log your activity on our ‘Camino Virtual Map’ – and share your progress & stories online.

There’s a prize draw for all completing their Challenge – with an ‘actual’ place on our ‘real’ Camino Trek in June 2022. Now – that would be something to look forward to!

How it works...

Track your progress online

Once you’ve signed up to your chosen distance, you can either ‘link’ up to our Camino Virtual with Strava (so your activities will then  automatically feed through to our online map) OR you can add activity distances manually (so each time it’s logged you’ will progress along The Camino trail on the map – along with the other participants). You have all March to complete your challenge, and can join up to 15th March.

Walk, Jog, or Run – Anywhere, Anytime

100 km

100 km from Santiago is the minimum distance needed on the ‘real’ thing to qualify for an official Camino certificate. The start point is the historic town of Sarria – and is popular because of its services and perhaps its relative closeness!

200 km

A start point near the historic castled city of of Ponferrada – which is surrounded  by mountains and  straddles the Sil River. In 1178 Ferdinand II donated the castle to the Knights Templar, to protect Pilgrims travelling along the Way of St James.

300 km

The city of Leon, founded in the 1st century BC by a Roman legion, and host to the first European parliament in 1188 – is your start point. Leon is famous for its festivals – with the annual ‘Burrial of Genarin‘ procession –  now a celebration of alcohol!

500 km

Your start point is near the cathedral city of Burgos – founded in 884 as an outpost of the expanding Christian frontier. It has been the scene of many wars – including the Duke of Wellington’s failed siege during the Napoleonic Wars in 1812.

769 km

The full ‘Camino’ if you are up for it! Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is the start – 8 km into France, with the original town razed to the ground by the troops of Richard the Lionheart in 1177. After 70 km you’ll pass Pamplona, famed for its running bulls festival.

What you'll get...

Below is the cost of entry & inclusions. Please note we can only send Medals & Buffs to a UK address. Registration is open until 15th March. Free Prize Draw entry if you complete your challenge – a place on the ‘real’ Camino must be won!
